Smelling Salts are an ammonia (NH3) gas that irritates the membranes of the nose and lungs and triggers an inhalation reflex which arouses consciousness and makes one more alert. This reflex alters the pattern of breathing and results in an improved respiratory flow rate and increased alertness. Athletes use smelling salts either when they need a burst of energy or alertness, or when they have been dzed or knocked unconscious to restore consciousness and mental alertness. Power lifters often will use them prior to lifting a really heavy weight, and boxers or fighters will often use them when they are dazed.
Open the bottle and add 1 capful of water to the cotton ball under the lid. Put the top back on and shake well. Open back up and carefully bring salts to nose and take a whiff. Close bottle after you're done using it.
